Phacoemulsification of Lens Fragment in the Vitreous Cavity

Cataract/Anterior Segment, Retina/Vitreous
Drs. Nesrine Abroug and Yassine Belghith manage a complicated cataract case involving posterior capsular rupture and retained nuclear lens material via vitrectomy and the use of a phacoemulsification probe to break up the lens fragment in the vitreous cavity. This technique is useful in cases involving a hard nuclear fragment in which the IOL is already inserted and a fragmatome is not available. Scleral depression is helpful to remove remnant lens pieces, and irrigating the sclerotomy is essential to reduce risk of scleral wound burn.
