Code deletions seem to be the theme for the 2006 version of Current Procedural Terminology. To ensure that you don’t mistakenly use the deleted CPT codes, it is important that you update the list of procedures that is embedded in your computer software. You should also update the codes that are preprinted on your superbill or charge sheet.

Evaluation and Management
In the E&M section, 11 CPT codes have been deleted.

Three of the deleted codes (99261–99263) are for follow-up inpatient consultations—CPT  recommends that you use the subsequent hospital care codes (99231–99233) instead.

Five of the deleted codes (99271–99275) are for confirmatory consultations—CPT recommends that you use the appropriate level of E&M code for the setting and type of service.

Three of the deleted codes (99321–99323) are for domiciliary or rest home visits—CPT recommends that you use the five new codes (99324–99328) instead.

Lens and Special Services
In this section, eight CPT codes have been deleted.

Two of these (92330 and 92335) are for ocular prosthesis services—the CPT states that for “prescription, fitting and/ or medical supervision of ocular prosthetic adaptation by a physician, see E&M services or General Ophthalmological service codes.”

The six other deleted CPT codes relate to supply of spectacles (92390), supply of contact lenses (92391), supply of low vision aids (92392), supply of ocular prosthesis (92393), supply of spectacles for aphakia (92395) and supply of contact lenses for aphakia(92396)—CPT recommends using the appropriate supply codes instead.

Eye and Ocular Adnexa
In this section, new language has been added to the descriptors for two CPT codes († indicates an altered descriptor; new text is underlined):

†     67901 Repair of blepharoptosis; frontalis muscle technique with suture or other material (e.g., banked fascia)

†     67902 frontalis muscle technique with autologous fascial sling (includes obtaining fascia)

Special Services, Procedures and Reports
In this section, CPT 2006 has deleted two codes (99052 and 99054), added three codes (99051, 99053 and 99059) and altered three codes (99050, 99056 and 99058; deleted text is crossed out; new text is underlined).

†     99050 Services requested after posted provided in the office hours at times other than regularly scheduled office hours, or days when the office is normally closed (e.g., holidays, Saturday or Sunday), in addition to basic service

•     99051 Service(s) provided in the office during regularly scheduled evening, weekend, or holiday office hours, in addition to basic service

     99052 Services requested between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. in addition to basic service

•   99053 Service(s) provided between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. at 24-hour facility, in addition to basic service

     99054 Services requested on Sundays and holidays in addition to basic service

†    99056 Service(s) typically provided at request of patient in a location other than physician’s office which are normally provided in the in the office, provided out of the office at request of patient, in addition to basic service

†   99058 Office sService(s) provided on an emergency basis in the office, which disrupts other scheduled office services, in addition to basic service

•   99060 Service(s) provided on an emergency basis, out of the office, which disrupts other scheduled office services, in addition to basic service.
