New Anti-Inflammatory Drug The FDA has approved Alcon’s TobraDex ST (tobramycin/dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension 0.3 percent/0.05 percent) for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions for which a corticosteroid is indicated and in which superficial bacterial ocular infection or risk of bacterial ocular infection exists. Alcon Contact Lens Delivery Vistakon has announced Acuvue Direct, a mail-delivery system for contact lenses. After signing up for the program at their provider’s office, patients automatically receive a three-month supply of their prescribed Acuvue contact lenses at quarterly intervals throughout the year. During the final shipment, the patient is prompted to return to their provider’s office for an annual exam. With each shipment, the patient’s credit card is charged for one-fourth the cost of the annual supply, and the payment is remitted to the doctor’s office. Credit card validation is handled by an independent third party vendor, so the doctor does not have to be involved in verifying payment information each quarter. Participating doctors will receive a report and invoice for the lenses that were shipped out that month, notice of cancelled or postponed orders and a list of patients nearing their prescription expiration. Vistakon Portable Video Magnifier Eschenbach introduces its Quicklook Focus, a handheld video magnifier that provides 3x to 18x magnification. The magnifier features 56 different background/foreground color options, a 4.3-inch LCD screen, an auto-focus lens and a freeze-frame option, which allows patients to take a picture of an object for further inspection. A flip-out camera also enables users to see objects, such as forms, crosswords or puzzles, as they write. The device is designed to look like a personal digital assistant. Eschenbach
