E-Prescribing and Attesting for Meaningful Use

Physicians who successfully attest to meaningful use of an electronic health record are not eligible to receive an e-prescribing payment for the same reporting year. However, physicians who plan to participate in meaningful use may still report the e-prescribing G8553 code on their Medicare claims to avoid the e-prescribing penalty and to ensure that they remain incentive-eligible if they are unsuccessful with meaningful use.

Meaningful use payments are made 4-8 weeks after a successful attestation is submitted. If a physician receives the meaningful use payment, CMS will automatically cease payment of the e-prescribing incentive for the reporting year.

Information and reference materials related to EHR Meaningful Use attestation can be found in EHR Central. Additionally, the Academy and AAOE have developed an attestation guide that is specific to ophthalmology practices.
