Financial Transparency: 'Sunshine Law' Overview

Academy Website Helps Members Prepare for Public Disclosure of Physician/Industry Relationships

The Academy has enhanced its website to help members prepare for public reporting of contributions of $10 or more that they receive from drug, device or medical supply companies. The website details the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ implementation of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, a component of the health care reform law, which mandates public disclosure of physician/industry relationships. It includes a timeline with key dates for implementation of the open-payments program, which begins before October 2014. As a first step in the program, intended to ensure greater transparency of health care providers’ financial interests, industry must begin reporting applicable contributions to CMS on Aug. 1. Physicians have no data-collection responsibility. They will, however, be able to review and, as needed, correct their information before its public release.
