Improving Your HR Effectiveness: Hiring, Supervising, Disciplining & Mentoring (SPE02)

This interactive course is designed to help ophthalmic practice managers and doctors improve their HR skills. An experienced panel of practice managers will present practical insights for ophthalmic practices regarding staff recruitment, orientation, motivation, counseling, discipline, and mentoring. This course will include role playing and provide time-tested, practical HR forms. At the conclusion of this course, the attendee should be able to (1) understand critical issues in hiring, orienting, motivating, counseling, disciplining, and mentoring employees and (2) apply proven practices to improve hiring, orienting, motivating, counseling, disciplining, and mentoring employees.

Do I Look Like Your Mother?! How to Manage the Difficult Employee (SPE05)

A humorous guide to dealing with non-compliant, subversive, or passive aggressive employees, emphasizing the importance of a strong and clear Employee Manual, Policy and Procedure manual, and termination tips.  The attendee will leave with a list of tools and strategies to better address the problems of managing difficult employees. They should be able to set limits, clearly defined rules and codes of conduct for their practice, giving them more confidence in their own authority.Highlights will include addressing the “pot stirrers,” passive/aggressive employees, the “skaters” around the edge of compliance, and the unique challenge of “inherited” employees. We will emphasize the importance of clear and complete documentation, knowing their state?s labor laws, and having a complete Employee Manual reviewed by an attorney, current Policy and Procedure Manuals and Job Descriptions and what the difference is between them. This course will also address some guidelines for proper employment termination and use some role playing.

Managing Your Practice's Billing Operation (SPE04)

This is a course on managing an ophthalmology billing operation. Attendees will (1) learn all of the steps of successful billing and receivables management, (2) learn how to monitor the collection performance of the billing operation, (3) learn how to aggressively manage accounts receivable, (4) learn how to identify and correct operational problems that cause rejected and/or delayed claims, and (5) obtain benchmarks for staffing and cost of billing.

How to Negotiate a Performance-Based EHR Contract (SPE47)

Practices today are compelled to implement electronic medical (or computerized medical records) to improve clinical quality, enhance efficiency, and augment financial performance in their practices. However, discerning what vendor and system to select, based on the unique objectives of the practice, can be overwhelming given the many choices available. In some instances, making the right selection can be career defining. The investment and risk are both substantially high, and success with EMR can be challenging and time consuming. This session provides many helpful strategies for negotiating a rock solid contract that is a win for the practice and holds the vendor accountable for delivery of promises.

Participants will hone their skills on how to select a high performing vendor and software, acquire many tools for evaluation and comparison of available products within the industry, and attain skills on how to negotiate a shared risk contract and pricing protections.

This course is designed to provide basic information and tools for dealing with several important areas a retina practice faces today.  Specifically, the course will provide information on how to encourage referrals to a Retina Practice; Retina in the ASC, specific Benchmarking for Retina, PQRS and E-Rx in the Retina Practice and Clinical Trials in a Retina Practice. Discussion time will be available on each topic.

You have your EHR installed, now what?  This timely session will reveal tips and tricks to optimize your system, improve vendor performance and responsiveness, and ensure your system is correctly configured to get the most from stimulus incentives.  The future of health care technology will be examined and this session will provide insights on how to position your practice for success in the future. This interactive program will encourage audience participation by inviting shared personal experiences and methods for optimizing their EHR system after the go-live. 

Here are just a few things to expect from this dynamic session:
  • Discover tips and tricks for EHR optimization

  • Review lessons learned though EHR implementation

  • Learn steps to take in order to avert risk and vendor performance issues

  • Acquire knowledge on how to ensure your system is configured for stimulus incentives

  • Discuss future HIT trends to prepare for now

Anyone who has implemented an EHR, or is in the beginning stages of implementation, should attend this course.  For those who do not have an EHR, you will benefit from lessons learned and future expectations.

Discovering Leadership Power, Potential and Possibilities of Your Personality (SPE10)

This interactive course is about leadership success and professional growth through expansion of “self”. You will grow by pushing your limits, personally, professionally and organizationally through a gained understanding of why we act or react the way we do in situations and how we can alter the outcome by reacting differently. This new awareness will become a well used tool in changing our attitudes, our knowledge and our behaviors in our professional and personal life.

During this course, attendees will actually take a personality test and learn how to utilize personality testing to build a strong work team. At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to identify basic personality types using the Enneagram tool and alter communication styles to become a more effective leader. They will gain a new understanding of behaviors, actions and reactions and learn how to achieve optimum results.
