Benchmarking Survey

What is the Academy/AAOE Benchmarking Survey?
The Academy/AAOE Benchmarking Survey is a web-based survey to help you measure practice efficiency.

What types of practices are eligible to participate?
In order to complete this benchmarking survey and access the subsequent reporting tools, you must be reporting data for a medical practice. For this survey, we are defining a medical practice as a single legal entity or collection of legal entities consisting of one or more physicians who deliver health care services.

At this time, the following organizations may not complete the benchmarking survey:
  • Integrated Delivery System (IDS)
  • Independent Practice Association (IPA)
  • Management Services Organization (MSO)
  • Physician Practice Management Company (PPMC)
  • Hospitals
  • Free Standing ambulatory Surgery Centers
  • Medical school facility practice plans
  • Medical school clinical science departments
  • Any other type of organization that owns, manages, or provides services to medical practices

We intend to expand the benchmarking survey to other practice settings. For more information, please contact us

Why should I participate?
Benchmarking is a critical tool to help practices measure efficiency and areas for improvement. The AAO/AAOE benchmarking project will give practices accurate information that will allow comparison to national averages. The baby boomers are beginning to retire which is expected to increase the demand for services in the coming years, and that will mean that practices will need to focus on operating at peak efficiency in order to handle the increased demand.

What is the deadline to participate?
Deadline to submit your final data extended to Monday, July 6
. As you might need to request information from your accountant and extract information from your practice management system, we strongly encourage you to begin the survey early.

How do I get started?

How do I submit my data?
Step 1: Practice Registration

Private ophthalmic medical practices are invited to participate in the 2008 Fiscal Year Benchmarking Survey project sponsored by The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE).

Make sure you are eligible to participate in the survey and then log in with your Academy/AAOE username and password. If you have previously registered for FY 2006, FY 2007 or FY 2008, do not continue, your demographic data has been saved. You may request your log in via e-mail or contact us at benchmarking@aao.org

Register Your Practice Now
  • In order to register you must enter your practice’s Federal Tax ID.
  • Only ONE set of data is allowed per practice. Therefore ONLY one individual per practice should be designated as the authorized data entry person (respondent), and only one user-account will be issued by the Academy per practice.

You can also access the reporting tools from the benchmarking Web page once a minimum of 15 entries have been reviewed and approved. Keep in mind, the report will change as the database is populated with more practice data. For fiscal year 2008 reporting, expect to receive an e-mail notifying you that the database is finalized in early August 2009.

  • To access the report, you will need to login using your Academy/AAOE login name/password and then enter the Benchmarking login name and password you created when you registered.
  • Please note: Identifiers specific to your practice will be stripped from the final data set, and the number of data sets displayed in the reporting tools (either the complete aggregate set or any filtered set as defined by the user) must be equal to or greater than fifteen (15) complete data sets.
  • Tools are provided to help you interpret your data.
