Over the last few years, the Academy's leadership has directed attention to help you prepare for the transition to electronic medical records.

With the recent increased federal focus on a coordinated approach to the electronic health record, the Academy has continued to refine this effort through the following resources.

Advocacy - The Academy's Washington office keeps abreast of legislation, provides input and coordinates efforts with the broader coalition of organized medicine.

Medical Information Technology - The Academy is on the forefront of developing standards to facilitate the use of health information technology and electronic health records, including a standardized SNOMED ophthalmic terminology and DICOM ophthalmic imaging standards, led by the Chair of the Medical Information Technology Committee, Lloyd Hildebrand, MD. Under his direction, standards-setting activities have focused on several areas, including...

  • Terminology: developing a standardized ophthalmic terminology within SNOMED;
  • Imaging: developed standards within DICOM;
  • Interoperability: created technical standards under IHE Eye Care

American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE): AAOE is the practice management arm of the Academy providing information technology and other business management resources to help you manage a successful practice. EMR is also frequently discussed on the AAOE listservs E-Talk and E-Expert and periodically featured in AAOE News.


bullet Annual Meeting

Join the Academy and AAOE in San Francisco for our fourth Joint Meeting with the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO). The meeting will take place at the Moscone Center from Oct. 24 to 27.
  • Demonstrations: Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Eyecare Showcase - This annual event is a monumental effort by industry and user groups to implement standards into products that can be demonstrated on the Annual Meeting's show floor.
  • Technology Pavilion: Attend free presentations and get up-to-speed on the newest technology;
  • Courses and Other Events: The Academy and AAOE programs feature EMR courses and other events as part of the robust program offerings.
