Distinct from other types of Academy awards, the Laureate Recognition Award recognizes individuals from around the world who have made exceptional scientific contributions to the betterment of eye care, leading to the prevention of blindness and restoration of sight worldwide.
The award may be made at the discretion of the Laureate Recognition Selection Committee for accomplishments of significance either past or present. One award (living) can be awarded annually; however, it is not necessary to present the award each year and the Selection Committee and/or the Board may recommend and vote not to give it at all in any given year.
The nominee: one (living) name will be recommended to Academy's Board of Trustees for approval. The induction ceremony for the laureate occurs during the Opening Session at the Academy's Annual Meeting.
Download the nomination form (PDF 233K). All nomination materials and supporting letters for the 2013 award must be received no later than Jan. 31. The name of the recipient is announced in the fall of each year and the award ceremony takes place at the Annual Meeting. The recipient receives a plaque, medal, lifetime Academy membership and reimbursement for expenses associated with travel to the award ceremony.
Nominations should call attention to the nominee's achievements and the significance of his/her work as it relates to significant contributions to the profession, new techniques developed, a seminal invention or a new treatment accepted worldwide. All nominations must include a statement of evidence of justification (letter of support) illustrating why the nominated individual is worthy of the award. Any additional supporting documents, beyond the required information, should not exceed 10 pages in length (including any appendices).
The letters may be sent directly to the Laureate Award Selection Committee by those writing them. Do not send videos or similar presentations, books or published papers. All submitted materials become property of the Academy and cannot be returned. All nomination forms and letters should be sent to:
