George W. Blankenship, MD
Dr. Blankenship served on the Academy's Board of Trustees as a trustee-at-large from 1997-1999 and as president in 2001. He was the chair of the Academy's Diabetes 2000 committee from 1992-1996 and a member of the Diabetic Retinopathy Outcomes task force. He has served on the Medical Student Education committee and the committee on Eye Care.
Dr. Blankenship received his medical degree in 1966 from Tulane University in New Orleans and completed his residency there in 1970. He completed a fellowship in retina disease and surgery in 1971 at the department of ophthalmology at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo.
In 2005, Dr. Blankenship retired, and he and Barbara moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He continues to see patients at the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in Hilton Head.
