Jeffrey S. Heier, MDJeffrey S. Heier, MD

Dr. Heier’s term as the secretary of online education /e-learning for the Academy began in 2010. He previously served as a consultant to the Academy as the video editor for the Ophthalmic News & Education (O.N.E.™) Network. Prior to this, he was chairman of the Digital Media Committee (2004 to 2008), after having served three years on the COVE Committee. Dr. Heier received the prestigious Secretariat Award for his leadership in the SNOMED tagging project. Dr. Heier is also a volunteer for EyeCare America and he received the Academy’s Honor Award in 2003.

Dr. Heier received his medical degree from Boston University, and then did his transitional internship and ophthalmology residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. In between his internship and residency, Dr. Heier served as a physician in a combat support hospital in the Persian Gulf War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal. Dr. Heier then completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston/Tufts University School of Medicine. He is a partner at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston and the co-director of the vitreoretinal fellowship. Dr Heier is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Tufts School of Medicine and a clinical instructor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Heier is one of the leading retinal clinical researchers in the country. He serves on the scientific advisory board or as clinical design consultant to more than 20 biotechnical or pharmaceutical companies, as well as on the protocol committee of the NEI's AREDS 2 study. Dr. Heier specializes in the evaluation of innovative treatments for retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and venous occlusive disease. In addition, he has played an instrumental role in the design and implementation of numerous early phase clinical trials for these diseases. Dr. Heier is the past president of the Center for Eye Research and Education Foundation in Boston. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Retina Society and the Macula Society. He is the recipient of the Honor Award and Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Heier is the secretary-elect of the New England Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. Heier lectures nationally and internationally on retinal research and innovative approaches to the treatment of retinal diseases. His research interests include new treatments for exudative and non-exudative macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, venous occlusive disease, vitreoretinal surgical techniques and instrumentation and diagnostic imaging of the retina. Dr. Heier has authored or co-authored numerous works in peer-reviewed journals, as well as served as a reviewer for Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina and numerous other journals.

Dr. Heier enjoys time with his family, especially watching, with his wife of more than 25 years, his two beautiful daughters as they dance at Boston Ballet.
