John R. Stechschulte, MD
Elected to trustee-at-large in 2011, Dr. Stechschulte previously served on the Academy board from 2004 to 2007, as the vice chair and then chair of the Academy Council. Prior to 2004, he served six years as an alternate councilor and then councilor for the state of Ohio. His Academy involvement has included the Executive, Membership Advisory, Awards, State Governmental Affairs and the Council Coordinating Committees. Recently he has been has been active on the Comprehensive Ophthalmologist Clinical Survey Task Force.
Dr. Stechschulte is in private group practice at the Arena Eye Surgeons in Columbus, Ohio. He is a Notre Dame graduate, with a 1980 medical degree from Ohio State University. His residency was at Wills Eye Hospital, where he served as co-chief resident. In 1985, he completed a cornea/anterior segment fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He was then appointed a clinical instructor at the Ohio State University department of ophthalmology. He was an FDA investigator for excimer-laser treatment of myopia from 1992 to 1995. He has served as an officer of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society and junior examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
As a corneal, refractive and anterior segment consultant, he performs specialty surgery and provides general ophthalmic medical care. Dr. Stechschulte is a medical advisor and associate medical director of the Central Ohio Lions Eye Bank. His practice is within The Eye Center of Columbus building, which includes multiple ophthalmic practices and an ophthalmic ASC.
