Keith D. Carter, MDKeith D. Carter, MD

Dr. Carter was elected as an at-large member of the board of trustees in 2006. He is currently professor and chairman, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In May 2007, Dr. Carter was named the Lillian C. O’Brien and Dr. C. S. O’Brien Chair in Ophthalmology. He also has a secondary appointment in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has many years of Academy service and earned a Senior Achievement Award Certificate in 2006.

Dr. Carter earned a B.S. in pharmacy from Purdue University and a medical degree from Indiana University. He completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan and a fellowship in Oculoplastics and Orbital surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Carter is a member of numerous medical and scientific societies, including the American College of Surgeons (serving on the Advisory Council for Ophthalmic Surgery), National Medical Association, American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and served as past treasurer and past president of the American Eye Study Club. He is the Academy representative to the National Medical Association. Dr. Carter has been a member of the University of Iowa faculty since 1988 and served as chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (2004 to 2007). He previously was the ophthalmology residency program director (1992 to 2006).

Dr. Carter specializes in oculoplastic surgery with clinical interest in orbital inflammatory diseases, tumors and periocular reconstruction.
