Robert E. Wiggins, MD, MHA
Dr. Wiggins serves on the Academy Board of Trustees as the Senior Secretary for Ophthalmic Practice and is a member of the Executive and Nominating Committees. He has served on the AAOE Board of Directors and AAOE Program Committee since 2012 and the AAOE EHR Committee since 2008. He is a past member of the POACE Committee and has served on a number of Academy task forces. He is a recipient of the AAO Achievement Award and Secretariat Awards for Education and Practice Management.
Dr. Wiggins graduated from medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill and performed his ophthalmology residency at the Duke Eye Center. He completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital and returned to Duke for a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship. In 2003 he obtained a Master of Healthcare Administration degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
After clinical training, he took a position for one year as a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at King Saud University in the department of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Since 1991 he has been employed at Asheville Eye Associates in North Carolina where he practices pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology. He has served as the managing partner there since 2000. He and his wife, Kim, have three children.
In addition to work with the Academy, Dr. Wiggins has served on the AAPOS Board of Directors as secretary-treasurer and currently serves as the finance chairman. He is an examiner with the American Board of Ophthalmology and serves on the OMIC Board of Directors.
