Ruth D Williams MDRuth D. Williams, MD

Ruth D. Williams, MD is a glaucoma consultant and partner at the Wheaton Eye Clinic, one of the largest ophthalmology clinics in the Midwest. Located in the Chicago suburbs, the 65-year-old Wheaton Eye Clinic provides subspecialty eye care to more than 100,000 patients each year. Dr. Williams is on the executive committee of this practice of 26 ophthalmologists.

Dr. Williams has been secretary for Member Services since 2005 after previously serving a four-year term as trustee-at-large on the Academy's Board of Trustees. She leads the Academy’s programs for young ophthalmologists. She chaired the Surgical and Specialty Section of the AMA, and led the Ophthalmology Section Council of the AMA for nearly a decade. Dr. Williams is an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. She served on the board of Women in Ophthalmology as secretary from 2003 to 2006 and has chaired several WIO symposia and its annual clinical conference.

Dr. Williams was chosen by her peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America,” was listed as a “Top Doctor” by Chicago Magazine and was chosen as one of “America’s Top Ophthalmologists.” She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. She received an Academy Honor Award in 1998 and an Academy Senior Honor Award in 2004.

A popular speaker, Dr. Williams has given invited lectures at national and international medical conferences, including Kuwait, Brazil, China, Canada and India. She has appeared on a dozen major television networks and talk shows. She has been interviewed by numerous magazines, including Health, Women’s Health, Shape, and Good Housekeeping. Recent print interviews include The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. Dr. Williams is a clinical correspondent for the Academy.

Dr. Williams attended medical school at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. She interned at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center. She subsequently completed a residency in ophthalmology at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of California San Francisco.

The mother of three, Dr. Williams is married to Stephen C. Gieser, MD, MPH. She is a marathon runner and avid reader.
