Thomas A. Weingeist, PhD, MD
Dr. Weingeist has served on the Academy's Board of Trustees as senior secretary for Clinical Education since 1994. Among the other Academy positions Dr. Weingeist has held are: secretary for Continuing Education 1992-1994; editor of the EyeNet magazine; chair of the selection committee for the Editor-in-Chief of Ophthalmology; member of Glaucoma National Scientific Advisory Board; Awards committee; Long-Range Planning committee; International Activities panel; Nominating committee; and president of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology 1995-1996.
Dr. Weingeist received a PhD in cell biology from Columbia University in 1969, and his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1972. He completed his residency in 1975 and a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous in 1976, also at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Weingeist specializes in vitreoretinal diseases and ocular oncology and was appointed head and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the University of Iowa, Iowa City in 1986. He has edited three books and published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed clinical and scientific journals.
Dr. Weingeist stepped down as Professor and Head on December 31, 2006. Since April 2007 he has been in phased retirement and continues to see patients as a member of the Retina Service at the University of Iowa and teach medical students, residents, and fellows in addition to participating clinical research.
