Academy Presses CMS on DMEPOS Accreditation Exemptions

The Academy and other medical and health care provider organizations met with CMS this week to seek clarification of an expected implementation date for legislative requirements in the Medicare law passed in July. Specifically, the groups sought information regarding accreditation of physicians who supply durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS). National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) numbers may now be applied for without accreditation by physicians who:

  • Had their NSC numbers deactivated;
  • Were newly practicing;
  • Were previously required to be accredited by March 1, 2009.

Additionally, CMS staff expects to provide further DMEPOS accreditation information during a national provider conference call Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT. The call-in number is 800.837.1935, reference conference ID 61231070.
