    Late Orbital Fracture Repair

    By Sheri L. DeMartelaere, MD
    Annual Meeting 2013
    Oculoplastics/Orbit

Based on her experience working at a level 1 trauma center, Dr. Sheri DeMartelaere says that surgery can be safely delayed for the vast majority of orbital fractures. In this 2013 Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Day presentation, Dr. DeMartelaere presents cases in which the rush to surgery may have done harm, resulting in repeat surgeries. She also discusses a 5-year review at her institution showing that delaying surgery 2 or more days did not negatively impact outcomes. More importantly, it showed that best outcomes occur when physicians work together as a team to treat these patients.
