Prophylaxis and Management of Boston Keratoprothesis Infections

    AAO 2015
    Cornea/External Disease

In this presentation from AAO 2015, Dr. Kathryn A. Colby discusses the diagnosis and management of post-implantation infections in Boston KPro patients. Keratitis occurs in 18% of cases and is typically treated with removal of the bandage lens, reduction or cessation of steroids, topical fortified coverage antibiotics, and close follow-up. Topical antifungals might be necessary if Candida is the causative organism. Incidence of endophthalmitis after Boston KPro might be reduced with prophylactic topical antibiotics, but still occurs in 12.5% of cases, mostly by gram-positive bacteria. The role of systemic therapy and whether to remove KPro and replace with a tectonic PK remain unknown.
