Why Change Time or Format of Residency Programs?

    AAO 2015
    Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Combined meeting with the Association for University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO)

For decades, ophthalmology residency training has followed a set time frame with a rigid rotation schedule: 1 year of primary-care internship and 3 years of residency. With recent vast expansion of knowledge and technology and the trend toward post-residency fellowship training (subspecialization) and with the understanding that adult learners need different resources (time and format) to become competent ophthalmologists, this video explores options for personalizing the teaching of residents, tailoring the learning experience of each to meet individual needs and acquisition of competency, and discusses future directions for the structure of all residency training programs.
