With the recent nod of FDA approval, the iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass (Glaukos) is the first ab interno alternative to glaucoma drainage devices and trabeculectomy. The iStent is approved for use in combination with cataract surgery to reduce mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma currently treated with medication.
Dr. Steven Vold, a clinical investigator in the trials for the device, shares his impressions on the place for microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), focusing on patient selection, contraindications, and the learning curve for introducing the iStent into comprehensive practice.
