Academy Seniors Annual Meeting Activities

The Academy Seniors has the following activities planned for the Annual Meeting in New Orleans:

Museum of Vision Exhibit

On the Shoulders of Giants
Saturday, Nov. 10 – Monday, Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. – 5p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Morial Convention Center, Hall G, Resource Center, Booth 3347

This exhibit will trace the lives of ophthalmology's greatest innovators, their students and the schools of thought that launched modern ophthalmology. Using a family tree as a metaphor, the exhibit will literally explore the roots and branches of ophthalmic heritage, illustrating how modern physicians stand on the shoulders of their predecessors.

Technology Courses

The Academy Seniors offer three innovative technology courses in New Orleans on Saturday, Nov. 10.

  • Email and the Internet for Older Adults: Online Commerce and Advertising

  • Online Commerce and Advertising: What You Need to Know to Buy and Sell on the Internet

  • Digital Cameras: How to Use Them
    2:00 – 4:30 p.m. (Event Code SPE09)
    Instructor: Jude Brown-Bellamy

Joint Symposium

The Senior Ophthalmologist: Transitioning to Retirement
Monday, Nov. 12 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Morial Convention Center, Hall D – Session Room

This symposium, co-sponsored by the Academy Seniors, Academy Committee on Aging and the American Geriatrics Society and the John A. Hartford Foundation Project for Increasing Geriatrics Expertise in Surgical and Related Medical Specialties, will address how to slow down your ophthalmology practice, review personal and professional issues including recognizing and addressing physical and mental limitations and maintaining a positive presence in your practice during this transition.

Special Meeting and Reception

Monday, Nov. 12 from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Morial Convention Center, Rooms 293 – 295

The Special Meeting presenters will focus on New Orleans' recovery efforts. Our keynote speaker, Norman McSwain, MD, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital and professor at Tulane Medical School and foremost expert on trauma care will share his experiences of practicing medicine during and after Katrina. Dr. McSwain will be joined by J. Stephen Perry, President/CEO, New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. Mr. Perry will present "Forever New Orleans: The Successes and Progress in Re-Building and Re-Branding America's Most Authentic City," the milestones, the promise of the future, and the plan.
