Will My Drusens Progress to AMD?
MAY 25, 2015
Question:
What is minimal macular degeneration and what is the prognosis? I have mild drusens (yellow deposits under the retina) and wonder if they always progress to full macular degeneration.
Answer:
Terms like "minimal macular degeneration" and "mild drusen" are not specific medical terms, so it is not possible to give you a prognosis. However, if you have drusen less than 63mm in diameter, they are deemed "small drusen" or “hard drusen” and have been shown to have an extremely low probability of progressing to macular degeneration (a breakdown of the tissues in the back of the eye).
