How should I test vision one eye at a time?
FEB 15, 2016
Question:
I read your pamphlet on macular degeneration and use the Amsler grid. I find that if I close the covered eye, I get a different result rather than just covering it. I also find that the color of item used to cover the eye affects the result. Will you please tell me the proper procedure, i.e., what is the color of eye cover and should eye be open or closed?
Answer:
The goal of covering one eye is to eliminate as much visual input to the brain from that eye so that you are only evaluating the visual function of the fellow eye. So I would recommend using an opaque item—even your hand! You do not need to close the covered eye.
