Question:
My brother had cataract surgery. Immediately following surgery his vision improved markedly, then got increasingly worse. The doctor said he has a sensitivity to the preservatives in prednisolone that is causing worsening vision, eye pain, headaches, but he needs the prednisolone. My brother can't take the side effects anymore and wants to quit the prednisolone. Is there another steroid he can take that doesn't have preservatives?
Answer:
There is no commercially available non-preserved steroid, however it is possible that a compounding pharmacy can make one for you. However, there are several different types of commercially available steroids and if your brother absolutely requires a steroid for inflammation after cataract surgery perhaps your ophthalmologist can try a different one.
