Question:
My optometrist has referred me to see an ophthalmologist due to a raised iris—he said there is a small bump behind my iris. What could this mean?
Answer:
I am not sure exactly what the optometrist is seeing. It would be difficult to see a bump behind the iris. The optometrist may have seen a mass on the iris which is most often a benign nevus (a mole, which is usually harmless) but can also be other things. If the iris is raised to give the appearance of a mass behind the iris pushing it forward and it cannot be visualized directly, then using ultrasound to determine its size and characteristics would be helpful. It is very rare to have a malignant tumor (cancerous) in this area and such configurations are often explained by something benign such as a cyst or other abnormality, however it should be assessed by an ophthalmologist.
