Question:
What does it mean when an eye doctor says he cannot see the back of your eye?
Answer:
The eye is like a camera and has a front part and a back part. The front part is what you see when you look at a person’s eye. The back part is inside the eye and your ophthalmologist uses special instruments to see these structures. Think of it like looking through a window into a room of a house. If the window is very dirty or even blocked by a curtain, you will be unable to see the inside of the room. If there is no light inside the room you will not be able to see inside the room. Eye conditions such as cloudy cornea, cataract, and blood inside the eye are but a few of the conditions an ophthalmologist might encounter that would make a complete examination of the eye difficult. I urge you to discuss this problem more fully with your ophthalmologist.
