Overview of Eye Care Skills
Revised an updated in 2005, this CD-ROM is the perfect tool for giving educational and training presentations to non-ophthalmic physicians. The disc includes formatted, comprehensive presentations for 8 important ophthalmic topics:
- Diabetes and Eye Disease
- Eye Care for the Aging Eye
- Eye Trauma and Emergencies
- Glaucoma: Diagnosis & Management
- Managing the Red Eye
- Ocular Manifestations of Systemic Disease
- Refractive Surgery
- Understanding and Preventing Amblyopia
Running the Eye Care Skills CD-ROM
With the Windows operating system running, insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive. The program will launch automatically Once the program has launched, proceed through the introductory screens until you reach the Main Menu (Presentations and Assets screen).
Main Menu
The Main Menu screen consists of the “Presentations” and “Assets” tabs. The Presentation tab will appear in the foreground with the Assets tab behind it.
Presentations
Opening a Presentation
The Presentations tab on the Main Menu contains a list of the eight available ophthalmic presentations. To open a presentation, click one of the presentation titles; the opening slide of your chosen presentation will launch.
Navigating a Presentation
- While viewing a presentation, you have the option to go back or forward by clicking the back or next button on the bottom navigation bar. To jump to a different slide, enter the desired slide number in the text field next to go to slide # and then hit go.
- At any point during a presentation, you may click the Main Menu button to return to the Main Menu screen, or to stop your session, select Exit.
Viewing a Presentation Tutorial
The included tutorials take advantage of audiovisual demonstrations that help guide you through the presentations on this disc. Before launching any tutorial, make sure your computer is equipped with audio speakers and the volume is set at an audible level.To view a Presentation Tutorial, click the button labeled Tutorial: How to Give a Presentation at the bottom of the Presentations tab. From the demonstration tutorial window, select the Presentation Tutorial. A scene will open showing a step-by-step process on how to use the presentations.

Assets
Using Assets
Assets comprise the tools you can use to help deliver and develop your own presentations. On the Main Menu screen, select the Assets tab to bring it to the foreground. A list of the eight presentations will be displayed. Roll over any presentation name to access its assets. The assets--Speaker Notes, Images, and PowerPoint Slides--will appear to the right of the presentation title. Select the specific assets you wish to open.
Accessing Speaker Notes
Speaker Notes feature the companion script to each presentation on this disc, as well as related appendices and resources. From the Assets tab, roll over any presentation title, and then select Speakers Notes. You may print the document by selecting File > Print at the top of the application window, and then refer to the notes while delivering your related presentation (Note: The Speaker Notes require a working version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 or later. Please visit the Adobe Web site, www.adobe.com, for more information on how to download a current free copy of Acrobat Reader.)
Reusing Images
All the images used in each provided presentation may be accessed through the Images asset and reused in your own presentations. From the Assets tab, roll over any presentation title, and then select Images. The Windows Explorer will open to a folder containing the images for that presentation. For your convenience, each image is named according to its presentation topic and slide number; for example, the image for Diabetes and Eye Disease slide #22 is named Diabetes_22.jpg.
Customizing PowerPoint Slides
To customize a PowerPoint presentation from the included presentation slides, use the PowerPoint Slides asset. Start at the Assets tab in the Main Menu. Roll over any presentation title, and then select PowerPoint Slides. The related presentation will open in PowerPoint, and you may choose how to build your own presentation around it. (Note: The PowerPoint Slides require a working version of Microsoft PowerPoint 97 or later. Instructions on how to use PowerPoint may be found at the Microsoft Web site, www.microsoft.com.)
Viewing an Assets Tutorials
The included tutorials take advantage of audiovisual demonstrations to help guide you through the assets on this disc. Before launching any tutorial, make sure your computer is equipped with audio speakers and the volume is set at an audible level. To run an Asset Tutorial, select Tutorial: How to Give a Presentation at the bottom of the Assets tab. From the demonstration tutorial window, select an asset from the help areas: Speaker Notes, Images, or PowerPoint Slides. A scene will open showing the step-by-step process on how to use the selected asset.

Help
Additional help notes are also available from the CD-ROM. Select Help from the Main Menu screen for a full list of help options.
Exit
To exit the Eye Care Skills CD-ROM, click Exit from the bottom navigation bar. Your session will close, and you will be returned to the Windows environment.

Errata
Diabetes and Eye Disease
Slide 44: The right and left images are reversed. Download the corrected PowerPoint slide.
Eye Care for the Aging Eye
Slide 45: Figure label should read, “Dense cataract causing pupil to appear gray rather than black.” Download the corrected PowerPoint slide.
Refractive Surgery
Slide 13: Misspelled figure label should read, “Keratoconus.” Download the corrected PowerPoint slide.
