SPOTLIGHT: PROFESSOR MARTINE JAGER
Past President - Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology

Dr. Jager

As the first international president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Dr. Martine Jager (The Netherlands) had the colossal task of turning ARVO into a truly global organization. She succeeded with ease.

"We wanted to be inclusive," said Dr. Jager. "We realized that outside of the United States, we really didn’t have much of a local presence for our members." One way to increase ARVO's presence was through the establishment of local chapters for ARVO. Dr. Jager was also instrumental in the introduction of equal access to travel grants, regardless of location.

Dr. Jager’s experience and contacts worldwide made her a tremendous asset to ARVO and continue to make her an integral part of the Academy's Global O.N.E. Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is comprised of six Academy members from different regions around the world and is tasked with bringing global and regional content to the Ophthalmic News and Education (O.N.E.™) Network. In this capacity, Dr. Jager helps to identify areas for expansion on the O.N.E. Network and sources that will be able to provide quality content on that topic.

"Including content from global sources is tremendously important," said Dr. Jager. "In Europe, we see very few cases of Tuberculosis, so when we are presented with a case – and they do exist - doctors regularly overlook it as a diagnosis. By continuing our ophthalmic education in all areas, we better prepare ourselves for the expected, and unexpected."

Dr. Jager is a strong proponent of inclusivity and quality clinical education. “I would like to encourage ophthalmologists to come to the American Academy's Joint Meeting and take courses with which they may not be entirely familiar. I am confident that it will contribute to your ability to diagnose and treat comprehensively and compassionately.”

More about Dr. Jager
Dr. Jager is the head of the laboratory of the department of ophthalmology at Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands. In 1993 she joined the American Academy of Ophthalmology and in 1995 she received the Marie Parijs Award for excellence in translational research. She is involved in several eye research organizations, including the International Society for Ocular Oncology and the European Society for Vision and Eye Research. She has served as Trustee of ARVO’s Anatomy & Pathology Section since 2003. She is also a graduate of the Academy’s Leadership Development Program.
