    Dropless Cataract Surgery

By T. Hunter Newsom, MD; Ahad Mahootchi, MD
    Cataract/Anterior Segment

Instead of prescribing postoperative drops for his cataract patients, Dr. Ahad Mahootchi prefers to administer an intraoperative injection of compounded triamcinolone/moxifloxacin/vancomycin, or TriMoxiVanc. In this interview from AAO 2014, Dr. Mahootchi explains that the TriMoxiVanc injection provides effective steroid-antibiotic prophylaxis while eliminating compliance issues and easing the cost and inconvenience for the patient. While Dr. Mahootchi worried initially that the injection would induce IOP spikes or glaucoma damage, the only appreciable side effect is floaters, and these usually resolve within 36 hours.
