In this interview from AAO 2014, Dr. Rose-Nussbaumer discusses results from the Steroids for Corneal Ulcers Trial, a large multicenter trial that compared 1.0% prednisolone sodium phosphate to placebo for bacterial keratitis. All subjects had culture-positive ulcers, and received 48 hours of moxifloxacin before randomization. At 12 months, they found no difference in outcomes in terms of visual acuity, infiltrate scar size, time to re-epithelialization or rate of perforation. However, a subgroup analysis found that patients with Nocardia species did worse on steroid treatment.
