The Winter Satellite ISRS Meeting took place in Athens, Greece, organized by the Laservision.gr Institute, in conjunction with the OMMA General Ophthalmology Meeting. The meeting took place at the Athens Concert Hall, otherwise known as Megaro.

ISRS had a very strong presence in this meeting, which was directed by ISRS Executive Committee member John Kanellopoulos, and included the didactic course on refractive surgery. The ISRS meeting included several Greek ophthalmologists that are already ISRS members as well as esteemed international colleagues.

Some of the highlights were Laser cataract surgery, LASIK Xtra and keratoconus CXL techniques:

  1. Dr. Zoltan Nagy from Budapest, Hungary, presented his long experience and showed video of femtosecond cataract surgery with the LenSx unit.
  2. The didactic session included updates on cornea imaging, risk factors for LASIK and customized treatments along with phakic IOLs.

Live refractive surgery cases were performed at the Laservision.gr Institute and broadcasted to the session. These were performed by Dr. Kanellopoulos utilizing the Wavelight Refractive suite (FS200 femto laser and EX500 Excimer laser) along with the Avedro KXL CXL device, and included:

  1. Femto LASIK to include prophylactic CXL treatment (LASIK Xtra).
  2. Athens Protocol (topo-guided partial PRK and CXL) for keratoconus.

The live surgery broadcast from the lasercenter to the concert hall was done through Wi-Fi and the iPhone 4S application “FaceTime,” possibly a first for a medical meeting.

Last, a difficult cases session was open for commentary. In this session, thin irregular corneas and high refractive errors were presented for comment by a panel of experts and the audience.

The meeting was attended by 600 ophthalmologists, mostly from Greece, along with a large group of international invited speakers.
