Manager, International Communications

Job Summary

The Manager, International Communications will be responsible for developing and executing a communications plan that provides broad-based as well as targeted communications to the various international audiences related to the Global Alliances division. Communications serve to strengthen the Academy’s position in the international arena by enhancing relationships with international leaders, connecting users and potential users with Academy programs and building loyalty among international members.  These activities raise the visibility, credibility and reputation of the Academy in the world ophthalmic arena.

This role will involve working with Academy staff, leaders of ophthalmic organizations around the world, Academy committee leaders, medical editors, scientific program faculty, ophthalmic industry personnel, and ophthalmologists. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills, a creative approach to communications, and an engaging writing style that can be tailored to regional parts of the world.

This position reports to the Vice President, Global Alliances and involves domestic and international travel, including weekend meetings, 5 or more times a year.

Responsibilities
  • Segment our international audiences and develop communications to each group, including: members prospective members, program users, leaders of ophthalmic organizations, collaborating societies, training directors, non-governmental organizations, committee members in the Secretariat for Global Alliances.
  • Write newsletters: News and Notices to International Members, Rotary Club Alumni, Outlook to International Society of Refractive Surgeons (ISRS) Members, Academy Live at international meetings.
  • Summarize clinical studies from journals and clinical talks for placement in newsletters and Web site.
  • Work with an international advisory board to solicit and review regional ophthalmic content for inclusion on the Global Ophthalmic News and Education (O.N.E.) Network.
  • Develop promotional materials and, as needed, user guides, on programs offered internationally.
  • Develop collateral materials on Academy programs for collaborating societies to use.
  • Update and bring fresh content to the international section of the Academy Web site and to the ISRS Web site.
  • Insert relevant Academy announcements and regional news for international versions of Academy Express.
  • Work closely with the Marketing, Membership, Meetings and Education departments to ensure accuracy and thoroughness of communications pertinent to their areas of responsibility.
Skills and Requirements
  • 5+ years of communications experience that includes developing and executing communications plans, determining strategies for different audiences and programs, evaluating and improving communication efforts to ensure optimal impact.
  • Strong writing skills with experience writing Web, promotional, and medical content.
  • Understanding of international communication styles and the ability to determine appropriate communication styles for different audiences and different parts of the world.
  • Engaging writing style tailored to regional parts of the world.
  • Ability to glean information from a variety of sources and understand various constituencies’ needs.
  • Ability to develop a consensus between departments when there is disagreement on communication.
  • Ability to gather information across the Academy, resolve any conflicting information to ensure accuracy and understanding.
  • Ability to craft Academy messages avoiding any real or perceived conflict with the interests of other international groups.

E-Learning Technical Producer

Job Summary

The E-Learning Technical Producer produces web based learning objects, online courses, patient simulation cases and interactive multimedia learning materials. This position will assist in the development of the E-Learning web applications including wire framing, layout design, and selection and testing of software tools. Furthermore, the position will provide technical support of online continuing medical education and the transition of products into the new LMS/CMS, Digital Asset Management systems, as well as user centric suggestions for content and delivery methodology.

The job requires significant skills in HTML, CSS, Java Script, Action Scripting, PHP, relational databases, multimedia processing and tools such as Flash, Dreamweaver, Premiere, Photoshop, Captivate, XML, and video and audio editing.

The E-Learning Technical Producer will recommend new technical approaches to online content development in order to enable the Academy to simultaneously create e-learning and knowledge-on-demand content.  This effort will revolutionize the member’s continuing education, preparation for re/certification, and performance support to be used in every day practice. This position reports to the Manager, E-Learning.

Responsibilities

Online Courses Development
  • Code courses, cases, knowledge-on-demand items to be delivered via a Learning Management System. (Skills: instructional technology, computer programming, multimedia web design and production).
  • Provide advice in the production of web casts or streaming presentations. (skills: page layout design, multimedia processing with Flash, Action Scripting, PowerPoint).
  • Interface with quality control staff regarding submitted products including but not limited to Current Insight, Courses, and Cases. (skills: page design, HTML, Java Script, Flash Action Scripting).
E-Learning Web Application
  • Assist the Manager, E-Learning with wire framing, QA, and other duties related with E-Learning application development.
  • Interface with the Information Technology division as needed.
  • Provide feedback regarding the use of open source software. (Skills: XML, PHP, HTML, Java Script, CSS, MySQL, knowledge of web services).
Technical Support
  • Provide technical support to department staff with the CMS, LMS and image library.
  • Assist with content archiving and related tagging. Provide technical recommendations regarding archiving and tagging approaches (skills: Digital Asset Management, XML, multimedia editing, relational databases).
Other
  • Other assignments including but not limited to video and audio editing for DVD and podcast production.
Skills and Requirements
  • 1-2+ years of hands-on experience producing E-learning courses.
  • 3+ years of multimedia development using a variety of technologies.
  • 1-2+ years of experience using web services and web applications.
  • Expert skill level with interactive multimedia skills (Photoshop, Flash, Action Scripting, Captivate), utilizing and adapting LMS, HTML, CSS, DVD production (video editing using Final Cut or Premiere), and CD and podcast production (audio editing).
  • Intermediate skill level with utilizing and adapting CMS, storyboarding, wire framing and Java script.
  • Working knowledge of PHP, XML content including DTDs and style sheets, Relational Databases (MySQL and administration), Information architecture, E-learning standards technical specifications and support (SCORM/IMS).
  • Experience managing databases for learning content, knowledge management and image archives.
  • Prefer experience with E-learning software such as Captivate or Articulate.
  • Prefer experience with Digital Asset Management systems.
  • Ability to provide technical support to department staff.
  • Ability to produce with tight deadlines (Technical project management).
  • Familiarity with project management processes and tools.
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Multimedia or related field.

Manager, Public Health and Manpower

Job Summary

The Manager, Public Health and Manpower will be responsible for developing strategies and implementing the organization’s legislative and regulatory priorities as they relate to Federal Regulatory agencies related to Public Health and Manpower such as the Departments of Defense and Veteran Affairs, FDA and FTC, and related external organizations.

This person will lobby Federal Governmental Agencies, the Executive Branch, Congress and external organizations to advance the legislative and regulatory priorities of the Academy, the practice of ophthalmology, ophthalmic research, and the delivery of eye care by federal health care systems. 

This position reports to the Director of Political Affairs and will also work closely with the Division Vice President. The position is located in our Governmental Affairs Division’s office in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities
  • Lobbies and develops effective working relationships with Federal Governmental Agencies, the Executive Branch, Congress and external organizations to advance the legislative and regulatory priorities of the organization, the specialty practice, research, and the delivery of care by federal health care systems.
  • Identifies strategic key external organizations, develops and maintains effective working relationships; analyzes external organizations’ activities to determine impact on ophthalmology; serves as primary liaison to external organizations in order to advance mutually beneficial coordination of issues, priorities and initiatives.
  • Analyzes Federal Regulatory, Public Health and Manpower related agencies rules and activities to determine the impact on the specialty practice.
  • Makes recommendations regarding programs and initiatives intended to advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the Academy and works with its leaders to develop positions.
  • Staffs Academy Regulatory Committees, representatives to outside organizations to establish Academy priorities, develop initiatives, programs and strategies.
Skills and Requirements
  • 5–7+ years of lobbying and/or regulatory related experience that includes independently developing effective relationships and coalitions with agencies, congress and external organizations.
  • Knowledge of Federal Regulatory, Public Health and Manpower agencies and related external organizations purposes, functions and procedures.  
  • Knowledge of Federal legislative Public Health and Manpower congressional committees and their purposes and functions. 
  • Understanding of federal eye care delivery and/or research systems (VA, IHS, DoD, NEI) as well as the ability to mount effective patient advocacy initiatives within those systems.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to effectively communicate and promote Academy positions and priorities to a wide range of constituencies.
  • Ability to independently anticipate and address adverse and positive developments, conceive and formulate recommendations to Academy decision makers, independently build relationships and coalitions among varying constituencies including agencies and external organizations.  
  • Advanced internet research skills and familiarity with Agency and outside organizations’ web sites.
  • Proficient in the use of a wide range of external and internal (Agency) internet search engines for the purposes of analyzing agency activity as well as issue specific research.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office applications. 
  • Must be self-motivated and work well autonomously as well as with a team.   
  • Bachelors Degree required.
