POC Topics
Beginning in 2006, practicing ophthalmologists up for recertification and who were Board certified on July 1, 1992 or later will be required by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) to pass the Demonstration of Ophthalmic Cognitive Knowledge (DOCK) examination every 10 years in order to remain certified.

The ABO's DOCK examination will consist of three sections of 50 questions each (150 questions total):

  • Core Ophthalmic Knowledge (50 questions): Considered fundamental knowledge for any practicing ophthalmologist. All ophthalmologists required to take the DOCK examination must be tested in Core.
  • You will be tested on two practice emphasis areas (i.e., subspecialties) of your choice. For example, if you have a practice emphasis in Retina and an interest in Uveitis, you could choose retina and uveitis and be tested on 50 questions in both areas.

OR

  • You can select one practice emphasis area other than refractive management or uveitis, twice. For the above example, if you select retina as your sole practice emphasis area, you will have a total of 100 questions in retina.

The ABO has designated the following list of Topics, arranged by practice emphasis area, as the minimum required knowledge for practicing ophthalmologists. The ABO will be creating the questions for the DOCK examination based on these Topics.
