Dr. Copeland is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and a Professor at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He also serves as director of the Cornea and External Disease and Contact Lens Services at Howard University.

Dr. Copeland has traveled to multiple countries in Africa to provide medical care through Medical Missions. He has also been a visiting lecturer or professor at universities in South America, Africa and India. Dr. Copeland's current research focuses on evaluating the accuracy of keratometry versus corneal topography in determining corneal power, corneal transplantation, ocular hypertensive treatment, a survey of glaucoma in St. Lucia; he is also an ophthalmic consultant for a pediatric AIDS clinical trial.

Dr. Copeland is a member of numerous committees and boards, including the advisory board for International Healthcare Services at Howard University Hospital and Howard University.  He is a Councilor for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also serves as reviewer for the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Grant Reviewer for the Healthy Vision 2010 Community Awards Program.

Dr. Copeland's career has been distinguished by many awards and honors, including the 2007 Alumni Achievement Award for Outstanding Service from the General Alumni Association of Fisk University, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Ophthalmological Society Appreciation Award for Dedicated Service in 2006, and the Howard University/Howard University College of Medicine Ninth Annual Spirituality and Medical Seminar Series- Physician Honoree, also in 2006.

Dr. Copeland earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine.
