SAN FRANCISCO—The American Academy of Ophthalmology—the Eye M.D. Association—recently announced the results of its 2005 election. The new term begins on Jan. 1, 2006. All governance documents, including the recent amendments, are posted on the Academy’s Web site at www.aao.org/bylaws.
C.P. Wilkinson, MD, was elected to serve as the Academy’s president-elect. Dr. Wilkinson served as trustee-at-large on the Academy’s Board from 1998 to 2001. He is a member of the EyeCare America Steering Committee and chairman of its Diabetes Program. Prior roles at the Academy include chairman of the Preferred Practice Patterns Retina Panel from 1992 to 2001, member of the editorial board for Focal Points from 1983 to 1988, and associate secretary for that program from 1988 to 1992. He is a past recipient of the Academy’s Honor, Senior Honor, and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD and Paul Sternberg Jr., MD were voted into the Trustee-at-Large positions. Dr. Coleman has served on several Academy committees, including chairing the Glaucoma Panel for the Practicing Ophthalmologist Curriculum (Knowledge Base), and has been a member of the Health Policy Committee, and a member of the Committee on Aging. She received the Academy’s Senior Achievement Award in 2004 and the Secretariat Award in 2003 and 2004.
Dr. Sternberg was the Academy’s Secretary of Communications from 2000 to 2005. He has served on the State Affairs Secretariat as associate secretary to the Committee for State Affairs Organizational Development, been Chief Medical Editor for Academy Express, and has been a member of the Patient Education Committee, Focal Point Editorial Board, and EyeNet Editorial Board.
Randolph L. Johnston, MD was re-elected to serve as Senior Secretary for Advocacy. He has been a member of the Academy’s Council, Committee on State Governmental Affairs, and Congressional Advocacy Committee. Dr. Johnston has been chairman of the Academy’s OPHTHPAC Committee and a member of the Regional Roundup Organizing Committee.
John R. Stechschulte, MD, was elected to serve as the Council’s chair. He has held the position of vice-chair of the Academy’s Council, and is a past president of the Ohio Ophthalmological Society. He has been a member of the Medical Group of Ohio, the International Society of Refractive Surgeons, and the Grant Medical Center.
Martin Wand, MD, will serve as vice-chair of the Council. He has held numerous positions at the Academy, including chairman of the National Glaucoma EyeCare Project and has been an Academy Councilor representing the American Glaucoma Society. Dr. Wand is a past recipient of the Academy’s Honor, Senior Honor, and Secretariat Awards.
