  • Correct Coding for AMD

Question: We were taught that, whether wet or dry, we should not specify which eye has AMD. Has that changed as of Oct. 1, 2016?

Answer: Yes. When ICD-10 first went into effect in 2015, the codeset had no laterality for wet or dry AMD. However, effective Oct. 1, 2016, both wet and dry AMD now require laterality and staging. Indicate laterality in the sixth position and staging in the seventh position.
