  • How to Stage Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Diagnosis

Question: We have a patient with secondary glaucoma due to trauma in her left eye and primary open-angle glaucoma in her right eye. Do I stage her glaucoma diagnosis based on her right eye only, or include the left eye since it has a greater visual defect?

Answer: As of Oct. 1, 2016, primary open-angle glaucoma codes now includes laterality in the sixth position. Include both eyes and their stages on the exam encounter. For any testing or surgeries performed, be sure to link the correct diagnosis.
