Screening and Standing Orders
Efficiency Conundrum: Can You Pre-Schedule Testing Services? Practices trying to streamline their schedule often get creative. If you’re like many practices, you may wonder if you can provide testing services for some diagnoses before the patient seeing the physician.
Unfortunately, what makes practice management sense, CMS deems non-payable. The physician must provide personalized care.
According to WPS Medicare Administrative Contractor, “Medicare defines any order(s) that does not specifically address an individual patient's unique illness, injury or medical status, as not reasonable and necessary. As is required by law, Medicare does not accept such "standing orders" as supporting medical necessity for the individual patient. Services related to population-based or condition-based orders are not reimbursable."
