EyeSmart Tackles Diabetic Eye Disease

With diabetes now the leading cause of new cases of blindness among working-age Americans, the Academy's EyeSmart™ public awareness campaign is launching a new initiative to help people with diabetes ensure the disease doesn't steal their sight. EyeSmart EyeCommitted is a social media campaign stressing the importance of an annual dilated eye exam. More than just an educational message however, the campaign's aim is to have 10,000 people pledge to actually get that exam.

Through a new widget designed specifically for the campaign, people with diabetes can take the pledge online and then get periodic reminders by e-mail to follow through on their commitment to protect their sight. Campaign materials also include a new poster and video with patients and their Eye M.D. describing diabetes' threat to vision.
