EyeSmart emphasizes the need for Americans to know their risk factors for eye diseases, infections and injuries, and the role ophthalmologists play in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye conditions.

Learn more, including details on the new national survey commissioned by the Academy that reveals most Americans underestimate their risk for eye disease.

bullet Get Involved with EyeSmart

The Academy is calling on its members to help make the EyeSmart campaign a success. Your participation is critical to ensure that as many people as possible become aware of the risk factors for eye disease, and to promote and safeguard the unique value of ophthalmologists in eye care.

Promote EyeSmart in your office and in your community using the simple tools and materials prepared by the Academy.

bullet New Screening Recommendation: Baseline at 40

The Academy is issuing a new eye disease screening recommendation for aging adults: adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40.

The new recommendation does not replace regular visits to the ophthalmologist to treat ongoing disease or injuries, or vision examinations for eye glasses or contact lenses.
