200 Hz Eye Tracker
The FDA has approved Nidek’s 200 Hz Eye Tracker for use with its EC-5000 Excimer Laser System.

Nidek’s 200 hertz CCD camera–based technology uses iris detection and multiple infrared beams to track the eye, and the surgeon can decide where to centrate the tracker. Offering both active and passive tracking capability, the device is not affected by the movement of instruments in and out of the surgical field. No pupil dilation, pretracking or preimaging of the patient’s eye is required.

The EC-5000 Excimer Laser System with the 200 Hz Eye Tracker is available in the United States for LASIK and PRK for myopia with or without astigmatism.

Cataract Safety Blade
BD, a medical technology company, introduces the BD Safety Knife with BD Xstar Blade, an angled, single-bevel slit blade for cataract surgeons.

The new single-use blade features an integrated retractable safety shield. The surgeon activates the shield through a spring-assisted slider, which provides tactile and audible feedback. The shield protects the blade during the procedure and in handling before and afterward.

The BD Xstar Blade is manufactured using a proprietary grindless process, which BD says ensures the consistent sharpness of its knives. The blades are offered in 2.75-, 2.80- and 3.00-millimeter sizes and come 10 to a box.
