The FDA has approved Alcon’s AcrySof ReStor IOL for cataract patients with and without presbyopia. Ista Pharmaceuticals received FDA approval for Xibrom (bromfenac ophthalmic solution) 0.09 percent for the treatment of ocular inflammation following cataract surgery. Xibrom is a sterile, twice-daily, topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory solution. According to Ista, Xibrom provides improved patient compliance and early onset of action. Advanced Medical Optics has received FDA approval for the ReZoom multifocal refractive IOL for cataract patients. This is an acrylic three-piece multifocal IOL. Moria has received FDA approval for its Epi-K, a disposable epikeratome for Epi-LASIK. This automated system is used to mechanically cleave the epithelium from the Bowman’s membrane, leaving a clean optical zone for laser ablation. Kowa has launched its Auto Refkeratometer KW-2000, which measures both refractive and keratometry dimensions. It measures the entire cornea, providing measurements in four discrete directions in 0.07 seconds. A recent addition to Eschenbach’s range of low vision aids is its LED electric handle that provides bright illumination for stand magnifiers. Eschenbach states that the bulbs and batteries will never need to be replaced. Carl Zeiss Optical introduced two progressive lens products, Gradal Top 1.67 Transitions V Gray and Gradal Top 1.59 Transitions V Gray. These feature photochromic technology from Transitions, Transitions V with ESP, and Gradal Top progressive lens design.
