Excimer Laser Approval and Expanded Indication for CustomCornea

Excimer Laser Approval and Expanded Indication for CustomCornea Alcon announces that the FDA has approved its Ladar6000 excimer laser with high-speed ablation for use in LASIK and PRK refractive surgery. The laser is designed to decrease surgical time, especially in higher refractive correction ranges, and reduce exposure of the corneal flap.

The FDA also has granted a broader wavefront-guided hyperopic indication for Alcon’s CustomCornea procedure on both the Ladar6000 laser and the LadarVision 4000 System. With this approval, surgeons are able to treat hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism (+0.75 D to +5 D sphere with up to –3 D cylinder) in addition to the current range for myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Phacoemulsification System

Advanced Medical Optics has announced that its Sovereign Compact will now feature upgraded WhiteStar technology. The WhiteStar v.4.0 Software is intended to provide Custom Cold phaco technology and allow individual selection of duty cycles in order to maximize surgeon control over the entire procedure.

The company reports that the Compact includes digital fluidics ensuring chamber stability and a simplified setup in a space-saving package. Other features of the upgrade include direct surgeon control of the IV pole height, mode changes from a foot pedal, as well as multiuser settings and customizable naming of phaco submodes for ease of communication.

Mixed Astigmatism Indication for Excimer Laser

WaveLight has received FDA approval to treat mixed astigmatism with the wavefront-optimized Allegretto Wave excimer laser system. The indication includes the reduction or elimination of naturally occurring mixed astigmatism of up to 6 D at the spectacle plane.

The Allegretto Wave is intended to deliver specific ablation profiles based on each eye’s unique corneal asphericity. In order to accelerate patient flow and patient comfort, the system treats one diopter in four seconds with a repetition rate of 200 Hz.

The Allegretto Wave also features a 200 Hz synchronous, video-based, active eye tracker. It can track pupils between 1.8 and 8 mm, and it has an automatic centering mode as well as closed-loop tracking.

The system comes with a built-in slit lamp, integrated plume evacuator and external laptop, among other accessories.

Video Journal

The third and fourth issues of the 2005 Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery are now available on CD, DVD and VHS.

The third issue provides an update in refractive surgery. Experts from around the world present new technologies and techniques, and discuss complications surrounding LASIK, phacoemulsification and keratoplasty.

The fourth issue features the segment, “Microphacoemulsification: A New Frontier,” in which surgeons champion a variety of procedures such as the bimanual sleeveless phaco technique and coaxial phacoemulsification with the UltraSleeve, among others. The final video of the year puts “on trial” the temporal shadow seen after uneventful cataract surgery.

The Video Journal is published quarterly by Robert H. Osher, MD, and is available by subscription.

LED Headlight

Eschenbach has introduced its battery-operated LED Headlight for extra illumination in a hands-free product.

It features three LEDs (light-emitting diodes) and an adjustable elastic strap, along with an on-off switch that allows the user to turn on one, two or three of the LEDs —depending on the level of illumination needed. The LEDs are housed in a ratcheting mechanism that allows the user to adjust the downward angle of the light.

The LED bulbs last approximately 100,000 hours. And three AAA batteries should provide more than 30 hours of use.
