Surgical Sterilization Case
Volk Optical has developed a new custom case for vitreoretinal ophthalmologists who use the company’s Autoclave Sterilizable and Chalam Self Stabilizing Vitrectomy lenses and surgical instruments.
The sterilization case holds a full set of Volk’s eight ACS direct image lenses, as well as two indirect image ACS lenses, two suture rings, forceps and a vitrectomy handle. The product is also designed to withstand repeated autoclave cycles for quick in-office turnaround between procedures.
Wavefront-Guided and Mixed-Astigmatism Approval
WaveLight has announced that the FDA has approved wavefront-guided and mixed-astigmatism indications for the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q system.
The Eye-Q wavefront-guided LASIK procedure was approved for the reduction or elimination of up to –7 D of spherical equivalent of myopia. It was also approved for myopia with astigmatism, with up to –7 D of spherical component and up to 3 D of astigmatic component at the spectacle plane. The procedure may be performed on patients who are 18 years of age or older with documentation of a stable manifest refraction defined as no more than 0.5 D of preoperative spherical equivalent shift over one year prior to surgery.
The Eye-Q mixed-astigmatism procedure was approved for the reduction or elimination of naturally occurring mixed astigmatism of up to 6 D at the spectacle plane in patients who are 21 years of age or older with documentation of a stable manifest refraction defined as no more than 0.5 D of preoperative spherical equivalent shift over one year prior to surgery.
Chopper and Handpiece
Bausch & Lomb Storz Instruments has introduced two new surgical products, the Weinstock Irrigating Chopper and the Brown I/A Handpiece.
The Weinstock Irrigating Chopper features a curved tip with a blunt end and is intended for use as a universal chopper during bimanual phaco. The length of the tip has been designed for easy insertion and control during chopping, cracking and general nuclear manipulation.
The Brown I/A Handpiece is to be used for viscoelastic cleanup following the bimanual phaco procedure. This instrument features a dual aspiration port system for managing removal of cellular remnants and viscoelastic through the microphaco wound.
Bausch & Lomb Storz Instruments
Reichert has released the Tono-Pen Avia Applanation Tonometer, a handheld instrument with a lightweight, ergonomic design that is intended to enable fast and accurate IOP measurements in many positions and with minimal training.
Activated by the push of a button, the IOP measurement is displayed on two LCD screens that are positioned on either side of the instrument for both left- and right-handed users. The Tono-Pen Avia features a 1-mm diameter transducer tip and micro strain gauge technology that is designed to produce measurements that are less influenced by operator bias than Goldmann tonometry.
The third and fourth issues of the 2006 Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery are now available on CD and DVD.
In the third issue, surgeons from around the world share their approaches to LASIK surgery, presbyopia correction using conductive keratoplasty, refractive bifocal surgery and phakic IOLs, among others.
The fourth issue covers topics ranging from the role of cavitation in phacoemulsification and infrared technology for lightless cataract surgery to photochromatic IOLs, the problem of surge, and new methods of learning and practicing capsulorhexis.
The Video Journal is published quarterly and is available by subscription.
