ASICO has added the Thin Kraff-Utrata Capsulorhexis Forceps (AE-4503RH) to its line of surgical instruments.
The forceps is designed specifically for 2.2-mm cataract surgery, with jaws that open wide enough without stretching the incision. A tongue-and-groove mechanism is intended to prevent the jaws from misaligning. The tool features 1-mm laser lines for help in measuring the capsulorhexis and sharp tips that can be used as a cystotome.
Durezol (difluprednate) 0.05 percent is a topical ophthalmic corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of inflammation and pain associated with ocular surgery.
The manufacturer, Sirion Therapeutics, reports that it has completed multiple studies to demonstrate Durezol’s efficacy. Two phase 3b studies evaluated Durezol for the management of postoperative inflammation in which treatment was initiated one day prior to unilateral ocular surgery. These placebo-controlled trials showed that a significantly greater percentage of patients receiving Durezol achieved a clinical response by two weeks of use.
Another study examining Durezol for the treatment of uveitis demonstrated that Durezol administered four times daily was as effective as Allergan’s Pred Forte administered eight times daily. Durezol was also found to be safe and well-tolerated.

Accutome has introduced its Donnenfeld Irrigating Hook, an instrument designed for positioning toric IOLs, especially after removal of viscoelastic from the eye.
The hook has two irrigating ports positioned at the tip of the instrument. These ports are intended to help open the capsular bag and allow the surgeon to rotate the IOL, while the hook on the bottom of the instrument is intended to grab the haptic for rotation. The irrigating hook is available in either a straight- or angled-tip configuration.
Vitreous Floater Demonstrator
Gulden Ophthalmics has introduced the Siepser Vitreous Floater Demonstrator.
Shining a penlight through the demonstrator’s lens creates a shadow on the model’s platform. It is intended to show how floaters, including the Weiss Ring, are caused and how they may affect the patient’s vision, as well as to help ease patient concern and assist the eye care practitioner in explaining benign vs. serious conditions.
The model eye measures three inches in diameter and is mounted on a white, opaque plastic base.
