FDA has granted TearLab 510(k) clearance for the Tear- Lab Osmolarity System.
It is intended to measure the osmolarity of human tears for aiding in the diagnosis of patients with signs or symptoms of dry eye disease. Requiring less than 50 nl of tear fluid for a measurement, this system can produce results in less than 30 seconds. The clearance allows the company to begin market activities in the United States to clinical facilities categorized as high or moderate complexity under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
New Bacterial Conjunctivitis DropsBausch & Lomb has announced that the FDA has approved Besivance (besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension, 0.6 percent) for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis on a seven-day dosing regimen in patients one year of age and older.
As the first fluoroquinolone developed specifically for ophthalmic use without previous approval for systemic use, Besivance is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria due to the inhibition of two enzymes essential for bacterial replication.
Bausch & Lomb
Odyssey Medical has announced that its Parasol Non-Sterile Bulk Pack of large-sized punctal occluders (for puncta of 0.9 mm and larger) is now available in a five-pair package. This pack with smaller quantities is intended to allow for better management of supply inventory when dealing with puncta of this uncommon size.
Also available is a 0.2-mm version of the Extend absorbable synthetic implant, as well as the Collagen Variety Pack, which includes 0.2- mm, 0.3-mm and 0.4-mm sizes.
Expressor Kit and Hand Sanitizer
Gulden Ophthalmics has released two new products.
The MG Expressor Kit is designed for use by a staff technician or the ophthalmologist to bring relief to patients with meibomian gland dysfunction. A warmed gel mask is positioned over the patient’s eyelids to help liquefy the contents of the meibomian glands. An expressor tool is then rolled over the eyelids and eyelid margins to help express and decongest the meibomian glands. The procedure does not require any topical anesthetics or cotton-tip applicators and can be performed with or without a slit lamp. The kit includes two gel masks that can be cleaned and sanitized, an ergonomic expressor tool and disposable expressor tool covers.
The GermControl Touch-Less Hand Sanitizing Unit is designed for use by patients in waiting rooms, lobbies and other areas where patients may congregate, wait or walk through. It employs an infrared sensor to initiate dispensing of the disinfection solution when hands are positioned at—but do not touch—the dispensing nozzle. The GermStar sanitizing solution is self-evaporating and kills 99.99 percent of most disease- causing microorganisms. The unit is battery-operated and can be wall-mounted or used on tables or shelves.
