New IOL Approval

Alcon has announced that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have approved the inclusion of the Acrysof IQ Toric IOL in the Reduced Spherical Aberration class of New Technology Intraocular Lenses (NTIOLs). This NTIOL designation was effective July 31 and increased the Medicare payment to ambulatory surgery centers for cataract surgery by $50 when surgery is performed with an AcrySof IQ Toric IOL.

This new lens adds an aspheric optic to the AcrySof Toric IOL. Alcon’s aspheric technology is intended to correct for natural spherical aberration to increase contrast sensitivity and improve night vision. This lens provides surgeons with an astigmatism- correcting IOL that is designed for small-incision cataract surgery.

New Instrument Set

Bausch & Lomb Storz Instruments has announced the release of the Wallace LRI Set for treating preoperative or residual surgical astigmatism and ensuring the cylinder is kept to a minimum following cataract surgery. It is ideal when the surgeon prefers to perform astigmatism correction without the use of a laser or toric IOL.

The set consists of three instruments. The Wallace Mendez Degree Gauge is designed for surgeons familiar with use of a standard phoropter. It measures 0 to 180 degrees twice in 10-degree increments with 10-degree interval marks.

The Colibri Forceps is used to stabilize the eye during the LRI technique. This instrument features 0.12-mm, 1 x 2 teeth and a serrated handle.

The Wallace LRI Diamond Knife features a single footplate that allows visualization of the blade as it passes through corneal tissue. The handle is designed for finger rotation as the 600-µm preset blade follows the arcuate pattern of the limbus.

IOL Injection System

Hoya Surgical Optics has released its iSert Preloaded Intraocular Lens Injection System, which is designed to provide predictable and safe insertion of glistening-free hydrophobic acrylic aspheric IOLs through a sub-2.4-mm incision. With the IOL already loaded and ready for insertion, the single-use system eliminates the potential for lens damage due to misloading. It also removes the risk of contamination from endotoxins associated with reusable materials and avoids the weaknesses of flash sterilization that can result in toxic anterior segment syndrome.

Dual Flow Cannula

ASICO has introduced the Miyoshi Ultimate Vertical Dual Flow Hydrodissection Cannula for microcoaxial cataract surgery.

It features two ports at 120 degrees to facilitate complete hydrodissection without rotating the nucleus when used with a 5-cc syringe. In cases where rotating the nucleus is necessary, the sandblasted tip enables the surgeon to work efficiently in the presence of viscoelastic. The cannula is available in 23 and 25 gauge.
