Herpetic Keratitis Treatment The FDA has approved Sirion Therapeutics’ Zirgan (ganciclovir ophthalmic gel) 0.15 percent as a treatment for acute herpetic keratitis. The approval was based on the results of clinical trials conducted by Laboratoires Théa of France in Europe, Asia and Africa that compared the efficacy and tolerability of Zirgan to acyclovir ophthalmic ointment 3 percent in patients with herpetic keratitis. Both ganciclovir gel and acyclovir ointment are standard-of-care therapies outside the United States and selectively target the DNA replication of the herpes simplex virus, unlike older antivirals, which affect both healthy and infected cells. Sirion Therapeutics Slit Knife Diamatrix has introduced the ProTekt 2.4-mm Slit Knife. This knife is designed to work with Alcon’s Monarch III delivery system, as well as any other system where a 2.2- to 2.4-mm incision is desired. All ProTekt brand products are designed with sharps-safety features in mind and are available in disposable or reusable configurations. All knives are packaged six knives per box and are available for complimentary evaluation. Diamatrix Video Journal The first and second issues of the 2009 Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery are available by subscription for viewing online and in CD and DVD formats. The first issue features international surgeons demonstrating various phacoemulsification techniques. The second issue focuses on vitrectomy techniques as well as complication management.
