Imaging Management

Topcon Medical Systems announced that the mobile version of its EyeRoute Image Management Suite is now available as EyeRoute Mobile, a dedicated iPhone application. Ophthalmologists who have incorporated EyeRoute in their practice can now securely access images and reports from any 3GS-compatible iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

Using a touch screen, EyeRoute Mobile users can view patient images stored in EyeRoute by modality or visit date. They can also review, pan, zoom, enhance and annotate the images with text and audio dictation options. Once the user has reviewed the images, an integrated messaging system allows users to share information with other EyeRoute users through the network.

The EyeRoute Mobile application can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes store.

IOL Approval

Lenstec has announced that the FDA has approved its Softec HD Intraocular Lens Implant for treating patients with cataracts.

The IOL is designed to make cataract surgery more predictable by reducing the variability inherent in any manufactured lens. When it comes to lenses used for vision correction, variability is defined as the tolerance or margin of error measured by the difference between a lens’ labeled prescription and its actual power.

The Softec HD is manufactured with a tolerance of 0.125 D, which, the company claims, is up to three times more precise than cataract replacement lenses manufactured under less stringent ISO standards. In addition to reducing variability, Lenstec’s manufacturing process makes it possible to produce lenses in 0.25-D increments for prescriptions from +18 D to +25 D.

Tweezers

Gulden Ophthalmics has released new curved locking tweezers.

The 4-inch stainless-steel tweezers feature smooth jaws with built-in slots. The 0.2-mm slots in front are designed for holding punctum plugs, and the rear 0.3-mm slots are for holding collagen plugs. The jaws also hold Castroviejo needles without causing scoring or damage to them in the process.

The ergonomic knurled handles are designed to provide a firm grip while still being comfortable to hold. The tweezers are balanced to ensure optimal control, and they are suitable for either left- or right-handed use.
